Nagaon: Renowned physician and writer Dr Mihir Kumar Goswami has recently taken charge as the new principal of Nagaon Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) on Wednesday.
Previously Dr Silpi Rani Barman was serving as the principal of the institution. Dr Goswami has been serving as the Head of the Department (HoD) of Medicine in Nagaon Medical College and Hospital here, reports the Sentinel.
He completed his MBBS in 1984 and M.D (General Medicine) in 1989, after which he attained PhD in Medical Science (First Doctored Degree holder in Assam in medical science) and Joined as faculty at the Medical Colleges of Assam in 1990 and then he worked as Prof. and H.O.D. (Respiratory Medicine) at Jorhat Medical College Hospital (Jorhat).
He started writing on creative and health-related topics in 1992 to increase awareness of health and gender-related issues amongst the general population. Besides, he has written a large number of poems, novels and stories focusing on the above-mentioned topics and also on the medical community (doctors and P.M. Staff, including nurses).
He has authored over 20 books and published around 1000 articles. He is a regular columnist in Sadin (House of Pritidin a publication), Janambhumi (Janabhumi Publications – one of the oldest in N.E. India) and Janasadharan. He is also a chairperson of the JEEPAL annual MOUTHPIECE of Jorhat Medical College Hospital. He translated two books authorized by N.B.T. (National Book Trust). Recently one of his Sci-fi stories has been included in the anthology of Assamese Sci-fi stories published by Sahitya Academy, an organization of MHRD (Govt. of India )New Delhi.
During the tenure of the last principal, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has permitted Nagaon Medical College to add another 100 MBBS Seats to the seat matrix of Assam.
