Ooty Govt Medical College and Hospital to become functional in July

Ooty: The Ooty Government Medical College and Hospital is all set to start functioning as a 600 bedded facility from July. The confirmation to this news has been given by Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian.

While speaking at the white coat event conducted at the medical college and hospital, Mr. Subramanian announced that the Tamil Nadu government has opened 11 medical colleges in a single day across the State.

He said that new medical colleges were developed and opened as a result of the initiative taken by Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, and the State administration which identified the districts that needed medical colleges and hospitals.

He added that the Chief Minister had ordered the authorities to accelerate the construction of the medical colleges. The minister claimed that K. Ramachandran, the tourism minister, had told him that in the past, people of the Nilgiris had to travel to Coimbatore for the best medical care. He asserted that the Nilgiris’ citizens would now have access to the greatest medical treatment available in the region due to the establishment of the medical college and hospital.

He stated that there were 1,650 students enrolled in the 11 medical colleges as of January 2022. According to Mr. Subramanian, there were 300 students enrolled in the Udhagamandalam medical College itself. The Minister also said that the Government Hospital in Gudalur was being upgraded at ₹ 30.10 crore to a district headquarters hospital, reports The Hindu.

The central government had given permission to open 11 medical colleges in the state as part of the national mission to increase the number of medical colleges in the country in 2021. Currently, the State has a total number of 52 medical colleges, out of which 26 are run by the Government. So, there are a total number of 3650 MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu that belong to the Government medical colleges, revealed the data presented by MoS Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar.
