Tamil Nadu to get 6 new medical colleges

Coimbatore: In a major boost to the medical education, six new medical colleges in different districts across Tamil Nadu is expected to be established soon by the Union Government said the Health Minister Ma Subramanian recently.

The announcement was made while he was invited at the white coat ceremony of at Government Medical College and Hospital in Ooty. He said that the centre will hopefully approve the proposal of setting up 6 medical colleges in the state. 

Waiting for the approval, Subramanian told TH “Permission has been sought from the central government to set up medical colleges in six districts including Kancheepuram, Tenkasi and Ranipet. There is hope that approval will be granted soon.”

Speaking at the white coat ceremony, Subramanian confirmed that The Ooty Government Medical College and Hospital will become fully functional with 600 beds in July. He also said that to provide easy and accessible healthcare to the state’s people, new medical colleges is set to be established soon.

Apart from this, he also inaugurated 500-bedded facility at Dindigul Government Medical College hospital built at a cost of `119.6 crores on Tuesday. Speaking on the occasion, the Health Minister said out of the 11 government medical colleges in 2022, hospital buildings with 500 beds and 700 beds, have been put into use in five districts including at Thiruvallur, Virudhunagar, Kallakurichi and Ariyalur.

“Apart from Dindigul, similar 500-bedded facilities would become functional within 10 days in Ramanathapuram and Tirupur. Later, such facilities will also be opened in Namakkal, Nagapattinam and Ooty. We are doing our best to complete building work at all the 11 new medical colleges and have them fully functional at the earliest,” he told TOI

Dindigul Mayor Ilamathi Jothi Prakash, Deputy Mayor Rajappa, Medical College Dean R. Suganthi Rajakumari, Medical Superintendent Veeramani, Public Works Department Chief Engineer Sathyamoorthi were present.

Primary Health Centre at Ammapatti, quarters for nurses at PHC in K. Pudukottai, Block Health unit building on the PHC premises at Ammayanaickanur were also inaugurated by the Health Minister on Tuesday.

Work is also underway for a paediatric ICU at Kodaikanal GH at a cost of Rs 30 lakh, a 50-bedded ICU facility at Oddanchatram GH at a cost of Rs 24 crore and a new building at Athoor GH at a cost of Rs 90 lakh, said Subramanian.

He said that a total of 1,650 students were studying in the 11 medical colleges that were opened in January 2022. Mr. Subramanian said that a total of 300 students were studying in the medical college in Udhagamandalam.

The Minister also said that the Government Hospital in Gudalur was being upgraded at ₹ 30.10 crore to a district headquarters hospital. Moreover, a Primary Health Centre has been built at ₹ 1.25 crore in Happy Valley.
