Bengaluru: In a tragic incident, a 24-year-old final-year medical student of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) was found dead hanging from the ceiling in his hostel room.
The suicide took place on Sunday night and was discovered on Monday morning.
According to the police, the student committed suicide after being unable to deal with social anxiety issues. In addition, he decided to end his life a week before convocation which is scheduled on April 18.
The family members of the deceased claimed that they had no idea that their son was suffering from social anxiety issues since he was mostly quiet, reserved and would keep things mostly within himself.
The deceased, a resident of Dharwad was days away from graduation before he took this extreme step. He was a bright and brilliant student who secured himself a seat at a top-notch institute in the state. He was also pursuing a one-year internship at Victoria Hospital as part of the MBBS course.
The incident took place on Sunday after the deceased talked with her elder brother on phone at around 9 pm. Afterwards, he locked his door from the inside, switched off his phone and took his life.
On the same day, one of his two roommates returned from their hometown and knocked on the door by calling his name. He also called him several times but received no response. Thinking he was asleep, the roommate went to another room to sleep, reports DH
The next morning, the roommate again went to the student’s room to check up on him but noticed that the door was still locked from the inside. The roommate then immediately alerted the hostel authorities. Upon their arrival, they broke the door and saw the student’s lifeless body hanging from the ceiling.
Following this, the college administration contacted the police. While investigating the case, the cops found a suicide note which mentioned that he apologised to his mother and stated that he suffered from social anxiety. He said his friends shouldn’t be blamed.
The note was found in his shirt pocket when the police were inspecting his body. The body has been sent for post-mortem and his parents were notified of his death.
The suicide note and his mobile phone have been seized by the police and a case of unnatural death was registered based on a complaint from the deceased’s father.
