Chennai: Another 350 MBBS seats are being added to the seat matrix of Tamil Nadu as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its permission for two private medical colleges in the State and it has also given the nod for increasing the number of UG medical seats at ESIC Medical College.

The apex medical commission has granted permission to Nanda Medical College and Hospital based in Erode for 150 MBBS Seats. Affiliated to the TN Dr MGR University, Nanda Medical College is run by Sri Nandha Educational Trust.

Another 150 MBBS seats have been added in the State with the NMC nod for starting the Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital. Established under the Tamil Nadu Private University Act 2019, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan University is run by Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Trust. The Trust runs already Perambalur-based Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital, affiliated with the State Medical University.

Apart from these two colleges, NMC has also allowed increasing 50 MBBS seats at the ESIC Medical College and Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science and Research in Chennai.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that last month providing the data regarding the number of medical seats across the country, MoS Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar had informed that there were altogether 72 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu with an intake capacity of 11225 MBBS seats. Among these 5225 MBBS seats were in 38 Government medical colleges and another 6000 MBBS seats were in 34 private medical colleges.

Therefore, with the NMC nod for two new private medical colleges and the additional seats at ESIC medical college, Tamil Nadu now has altogether 74 medical colleges with an intake capacity of 11575 MBBS seats.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, Erode-based Nanda Medical College and Hospital is located at Pichandampalayam, around 6 km away from Erode town. The MBBS seats at this medical college will be shared with the state selection committee for admission of students under the government quota.

Admission for both the government and management quota seats will be done by the State Selection Committee on the basis of merit according to the scores in the NEET examination.

While new private medical colleges are being added to the State, there will be no new government medical colleges. Earlier, the State Directorate of Medical Education had confirmed that even though the State is waiting for getting funds and permission for commencing six new medical colleges, no application has been submitted for increasing seats in the existing medical colleges.

The daily adds that the State announced its plans for starting six medical colleges in Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Tirupattur, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, and Kallakurichi. However, it has not applied for permission in 2023.
