Imphal: In a move to ensure the availability of specialist doctors in rural areas as well, the postgraduate medical students will be deployed at different district hospitals of Manipur under the National Medical Council’s (NMC) district residency programme.

The district residence scheme for the state’s postgraduate medical students was officially launched on Monday at the Medical Directorate in Lamphelpat by Health Minister Sapam Ranjan.

The minister said that as part of their curriculum, postgraduate medical residents from RIMS and JNIMS will be deployed to various district hospitals and they will serve there for three months, reports Imphal Times.

Before leaving the Medical Directorate Office, Health Minister Sapam Ranjan wished the Post Graduate students and mentioned that the National Medical Council has made this programme mandatory. Additionally, he continued, it also reasserts the obligation of a postgraduate resident.

The minister advised the medicos to learn medical protocols as they were medical professionals. Serving the public with sincerity is the profession’s credo. Therefore, he continued, one should provide the people with good service.

Later,  the new construction work of the health directorate office and its surrounding has been inspected by the ministerial team. Vumlunmang, the Additional Chief Secretary of Health Services Manipur, Kh Sasheekumar Mangang, the Director of Health Services, and representatives from RIMS and JNIMS and staff members of Medical Directorate attended the event, reports the Daily.

It should be mentioned that the NMC has made it mandatory for post-graduate medical students to complete a three-month placement at a district hospital.
State Health Officials indicated that under the proposal, medicos enrolled in postgraduate programmes at the city’s government hospital will be obligated to work at city government, government-aided, and semi-aided hospitals.
DRP or District Residency Programme, is also mandatory for students admitted to private medical colleges and deemed universities. For the purpose of this programme, a District Hospital shall be a functional public sector/government-funded hospital of not less than 100 beds with facilities/staff for the designated specialties at that level/facility.
