To assert that the eyes are the most effective and expressive mode of communication is an understatement. They are a reflection of a person’s numerous moods and emotions. Since time immemorial, poets have been fascinated by eyes.
We humans have a highly developed brain that decodes stimuli from our five sense organs and infers information about the object viewed. God endowed us with eyes to appreciate the beauty and variety found in the world he created. As a result, our eyes deserve some extra attention.
Numerous factors, according to ayurveda, affect the function of the eyes, reducing their efficiency and causing discomfort. According to Ayurveda, eye diseases are caused by tridoshas becoming vitiated. When the triads (vatha, pitta, and kapha) are balanced, they function normally in their respective channels and locations.
The primary factors that vitiate these doshas in the eyes are as follows:
• Taking a cold bath following vigorous exercise or after spending time in a hot climate.
• Straining the eyes for extended periods of time.
• Staying awake for an extended period of time and sleeping in the afternoon.
• Moving through dust, a polluted environment, and smoke.
• Managing natural inclinations,
• Constant use of the microscope
All of these factors aggravate the doshas of the eyes and contribute to the development of numerous eye diseases.
Eyes that are worn out
Tired eyes are primarily caused by allergies, fatigue, excessive strain on the eyes, infection, and insufficient oxygen supply to the eye tissues. Dryness and irritation are the primary symptoms of tired eyes.
Taking care of tired eyes on your own:
• Give your eyes a break by closing them for a minute in between work hours.
• Get a good night’s sleep of six to seven hours.
• For a few minutes, place a fresh cucumber slice on the eyes. This rejuvenates the eyes.
• Wash your eyes several times a day with cold water.
• In a cup of water, combine a few drops of rose water. Two cotton gauzes dipped in it should be placed on your eyes for a few minutes.
If itching, redness, or discomfort persists, consult an ophthalmologist.
Eyes that are parched
When we are sad or overjoyed, tears flow down our cheeks. However, our eyes are always protected by a thin tear film. According to Ayurveda, this film represents aap dhatu or jaladhatu (water element). The tear film maintains the clarity of our vision and protects our eyes from irritations. Reduced tear production alters the tear film and dries it. This is referred to as dry eyes.
The factors that contribute to dry eyes
1. Age:- As we age, our tear production decreases, resulting in dry eyes. Women are more likely to suffer from this than men.
2. Systemic diseases: These include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and scleroderma.
3. Several medications: Several medications such as diuretics, antihistamines, decongestants, sleeping pills, a few antidepressants, acne medications, and opiate preparations, as well as an allergic reaction to eye ointments and eye drops.
4. Eye diseases: blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid margins), entropion (inward bending of the eyelid), and ectropion (outward bending of eyelid).
5. Environmental irritants: smoke, dust, wind, sun, and dry climate.
6. Lifestyles: Extended hours in front of the computer, extended hours reading, extended hours driving.
7. Tears are composed of a variety of substances, including water, fatty oils, proteins, and electrolytes.
8. According to ayurvedic principles, this condition is caused by a vitiated vayu.
Dry eye signs and symptoms include the following:
This condition typically affects both eyes. Itching, burning, or stinging sensation in the eyes, as if an object has entered. You find wearing contact lenses extremely difficult. Eyes are easily fatigued. Mucus secretion in the form of threads around the eyes. When exposed to smoke or wind, the eyes become extremely irritated.

Dry eye prevention:
• Avoid blowing air directly through hair dryers, fans, or air conditioners.
• When the weather is excessively hot or windy, wear cooling glasses.
• Protect your eyes with swimming glasses to avoid excessive irritation.
• Avoid arid climates.
• Don’t forget to blink while working in front of a computer, reading, or watching television.
• Refrain from rubbing your eyes.
Dry eye remedies at home
• Boil castor leaves in water and allow to cool; when lukewarm, dip cotton gauze in it and place it over both eyes. Once the gauze has cooled, it can be re-dipped in the decoction and placed on the eyes.
• Boil two spoons of triphala powder in a glass of water until it reduces to a quarter of a glass; strain and add a spoon of honey when it is lukewarm. Consuming this decoction daily helps to strengthen the eyes.
Circles of Darkness
Dark Circles are a common aesthetic issue. Nine out of ten people will experience dark circles under their eyes at some point in their lives, as the skin beneath our eyes is extremely thin. As a result of exposure to the sun’s rays, the skin around the eyes becomes damaged, thin, and wrinkled. Veins beneath this thin skin begin to appear prominent. Thus, dark circles are formed by wrinkles and prominent veins. Pigmentation can also result in dark circles.

5. Sleep for an adequate amount of time.
6. Avoid scratching the skin beneath the eyes.
7. Consume a nutritious diet.
Irritation of the conjunctiva: (Pink Eye)
Conjunctivitis can be brought on by viruses, bacteria, or allergens such as pollen or dust. Bacterial or viral conjunctivitis can affect one or both eyes. Both eyes are affected by allergic conjunctivitis.
The most frequently encountered symptoms are redness, itching, grittiness, tearing, and discharge from one or both eyes. Additionally, blurred vision and sensitivity to light accompany the aforementioned symptoms.
1. Avoid using other people’s eye cosmetics and sharing your own.
2. Avoid repeatedly touching your eyes with your hands.
3. Rinse your hands thoroughly and repeatedly.
4. Replace pillowcases on a regular basis.
5. Do not share napkins, towels, or hand kerchiefs with others and refrain from using theirs.
6. Daily, wash the items mentioned above in warm water and press them with a hot iron.
7. Care for your contact lenses according to your doctor’s instructions.
8. Avoid rubbing your eyes.
